Casillas: I’m not immortal

Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has responded to Vicente del Bosque’s words after the 4-0 defeat of Luxembourg.

The national team boss dropped the 33-year-old from his starting line-up for the game, and afterwards implied there would be a smooth transition until Manchester United’s David de Gea makes the No 1 jersey his own.

Casillas, who has 158 international caps and captained Spain to glory at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, has come under increasing pressure for club and country this season after a series of disappointing displays.

“I’m not immortal and won’t last forever, but everyone has to make their own mind up about when to leave the national team” said Casillas at a promotional event, and reported by AS.

“However, at the moment I feel good, strong and with the desire to help my country do the best we can to qualify for France [Euro 2016] and win the tournament, which will not be easy.

“I wasn’t surprised by what Del Bosque said because we have a fantastic relationship. He said the same thing to me and I didn’t take it personally.

“There are other players coming through and I don’t look on it as a bad thing,” he concluded.
