Serbia end La Rojita reign

Spain Under-21s, winners of the last two editions, will take no part in the 2015 European Championship finals in the Czech Republic.

La Rojita’s 35-match unbeaten run was ended on Tuesday evening when they went down 2-1 to Serbia in Cadiz following Friday’s goalless first leg.

Saul Niguez put through his own goal just after the half-hour mark to give the visitors the lead but Spanish hopes were briefly revived when Sergi Roberto levelled two minutes into stoppage time.

However, with Albert Celades youngsters needing another goal to go through their fate was sealed within 60 seconds when Filip Kostic grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner at Ramon de Carranza.

Spain midfielder Pablo Sarabia [pictured] told reporters afterwards of the pain the players felt at their surprise elimination.

“We are very hurt by this defeat. We must learn from our mistakes and it’s a shame to miss out on such a great tournament.

“We had more chances than our opponents and they scored with their first opportunity, so it wasn’t enough for us.

“However, we made errors and really should have scored more goals.”

The defeat means Spain also fail to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
