‘Oblak has a spectacular future’

Miguel Angel Moya believes Jan Oblak can be the long-term first-choice goalkeeper for Atletico Madrid.

Both players move to Vicente Calderon over summer, replacing Thibaut Courtois, who returned to Chelsea at the end of his loan spell.

Oblak, a big-money signing from Benfica, was expected to be the champion’s regular goalkeeper but he has largely played second fiddle to the more experienced Moya.

“It’s obvious that an expensive signing generates excitement and enthusiasm,” Moya said regarding his teammate.

“I think there were people who following La Liga who knew me. My perception is that people feel the goalkeeper’s position is well-covered with me, 10 years in the Primera, and Oblak, who has a spectacular future.

“People at home will make their own choice. The only thing I do is try to make it difficult for the Coach, so I look competent and competitive.

“It used to be normal to have a first-choice goalkeeper and an alternate. In recent years Coaches have come in with new ideas or old ones have changed their minds.

“The competition is greater now and we have to accept rotation even in our position.”
