Del Bosque delighted for Costa

Vicente Del Bosque has spoken of his happiness at seeing Diego Costa get off the mark for Spain in the win over Luxembourg.

Costa netted his first international goal in his seventh appearance as the minnows were dispatched 4-0, David Silva, Paco Alcacer and Juan Bernat also on target.

“We all wanted [Costa to score],” Del Bosque told reporters after the match, according to AS.

“We’ve always been happy with his movement and he has worked well. He’ll be very important in the future.

“Everyone wants to score goals and he linked up very well with Alcacer.

“At half-time I told Diego that he needed to keep calm. He was a little nervous, not happy and not able to find a solution. When a player is so eager it’s always ok.”

The match also saw David De Gea come in for Iker Casillas after Casillas’ mistake in the defeat against Slovakia, although Del Bosque insisted pre-match a change was possible regardless of the result in midweek.

He elaborated on the swap in goal and refused to say who would be first choice in future.

“We had planned this change and wanted there to be a smooth transition, so they’re both used to playing,” Del Bosque revealed.

“We want them to be familiar little by little, both David and Iker.”

De Gea was one of a number of new faces, with Bernat scoring on his debut after an assist from another debutant, Rodrigo Moreno.

“We’re progressing in this competition. There are 30 or something players we could call up and it depends on who is fit,” Del Bosque said when the subject of the new faces was raised.

“We should have attacked more and needed more pace in the second half.

“The second half was less flashy but still effective. The football was slower and uglier for the viewer. The tactics were very different to the previous game.

“We now have to keep scoring points and improve the way we play.”
