Del Bosque: Five changes for Spain

Vicente Del Bosque has revealed there will be five changes to the Spain side to play Luxembourg from the XI that lost to Slovakia.

Del Bosque was speaking at his pre-match Press conference and declined to name the players who would be dropping out and who would come in.

The Coach did however stress that the team was planned before the defeat on Thursday and is not a reaction to dropping points in Zilina.

“We planned to make changes for Luxembourg before the match against Slovakia and defeat doesn’t change our idea,” AS reports Del Bosque as saying.

“We believe in making five changes and barring unforeseen circumstances, that’s what we’ll do.

“We’ve always been faithful to our style. The other day we had a lot of shots but the goals didn’t materialise.

“When we were level in Slovakia we went for the second goal. We don’t agree with the outcome.

“Luxembourg will be a fresh and open team. They’ll play against us like they did Macedonia and Belarus.

“They have their virtues. Against Macedonia they were leading and only lost in the last minute.

“We’ll decide the system based on the players we have. We can play with more width or look for balls inside.

“We pursue attacking solutions. Even against Slovakia we had 19 corners without profit while our rival had only three. But it’s true we failed sometimes in the final stages.”

Del Bosque was asked for his thoughts on the criticism that has been levelled at Spain in the aftermath of the defeat to Slovakia and he was philosophical about it.

“I understand the criticism. All I ask is that it’s educated about sport and for personal respect,” he said.

“We accept criticism. We’re not going to grieve over it, but rather go out with the idea of looking for three points.

“I’ve been in football for many years and I accept and understand criticism and nothing more, especially if it’s accompanied by data, personal respect and education.

“The latest criticism is a result of certain events and the defeats in recent games. In Slovakia we were drawing in the game and we weren’t satisfied. Hence the unexpected goal [Spain conceded].

“We took that risk because we wanted to win. Ultimately the result was what it was.

The form of Iker Casillas and Diego Costa was also raised, with the former at fault for Slovakia’s first goal and the latter yet to get off the mark for La Roja.

“Casillas has been looking good. He’s training well and we’ll see if he plays or not,” Del Bosque noted.

“Costa has desire but not success. But if we hadn’t caught him in time [to play for Spain], we’d have regretted it.

“He scores goals for his club. We see a wonderful attitude and huge desire. Maybe he’s overexcited for playing but it’s true there hasn’t been the success with Spain as with Atletico Madrid and Chelsea.

“But we are happy to have him here. It’s not a problem. He has our confidence and if he can score goals with his team, he can do it here.”
