Correa closer to Atletico

Angel Correa is getting closer to becoming an Atletico Madrid player has he recovers from heart surgery.

Atletico were set to sign the young forward from San Lorenzo with a fee of €8m agreed and the player accepting a five-year contract.

A tumour in his heart was discovered, however, needing surgery and, as a result, the move was put on hold.

AS reports Correa is recovering from the operation and it’s hoped the contract will be signed by the end of October, so he will essentially be an Atletico player.

The next step then depends on Correa’s fitness and the make-up of the Atleti squad. Miranda is aiming to have a Spanish passport by the end of the year, which would free up a non-EU space in the champions’ squad.

Correa could be loaned out from January until the end of the season, with Rayo Vallecano the most likely destination.

Leo Baptistao and Emiliano Insua are currently on loan in Vallecas from Vicente Calderon and the relationship between the clubs remains strong.

AS note that observers in Argentina feel Correa has the potential to echo former Atletico striker Sergio Aguero, but neither San Lorenzo nor Atleti will rush his recovery.

But it is expected that Correa’s move to the capital will be wrapped up within a matter of weeks.
