Azpi: Spain have to be self-critical

Cesar Azpilicueta believes the answer to improving Spain’s form lies in the players looking to themselves to improve.

Azpilicueta appeared before the Press ahead of La Roja’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Luxembourg and admitted he had no complaints over the criticism the team has received since losing to Slovakia.

The Chelsea defender accepted that when results aren’t good, criticism is part of the game.

“That’s what football is like. When you win everything is wonderful and now results aren’t good, there’s criticism,” Marca reports Azpilicueta as saying.

“It’s complicated and every time we have to take into account the most difficult things.

“We’re all in the same boat. You have to look at yourself, improve and be self-critical. The others understand.

“We’re not in a good moment of form but we are convinced we will do better.”

Azpilicueta is though ready to look to the future, explaining that Spain were unfortunate against Slovakia but arguing their form hasn’t been terrible of late.

He also came to the defence of Iker Casillas, who was at fault for the first goal.

“After the drubbing of the World Cup we started again, with people coming from the Under-21s,” Azpi added.

“We had a good game against Macedonia but then it was a setback, so we look to Luxembourg.

“After the Slovakia game we were hurt. They had three shots and scored twice. Now any team wants to stop you creating.

“Casillas is an example to all of us. He’s highly respected around the world but of course, when we lose he doesn’t have the best spirit.”
