‘Defeat not fair on Spain’

Juanfran has added his voice to the chorus bemoaning Spain’s defeat against Slovakia, insisting La Roja didn’t deserve to lose.

Spain were beaten 2-1 by Slovakia and had the majority of the play but were caught on the counter-attack for the decisive goal, with the first coming from a mistake by Iker Casillas.

The goalkeeper failed to save a free-kick heading straight for him, while Paco Alcacer’s equaliser was later cancelled out.

“We have another game on Sunday and we’ll win that,” Juanfran said, AS reports.

“The result isn’t fair and we deserved to win. We had a lot of chances and they only had a few. They had luck in front of goal, which is what we wanted too.”

Juanfran was asked if he felt the attacking changes made by Vicente del Bosque – including replacing him and using Santi Cazorla as a makeshift right-back – contributed to the defeat.

“The goal didn’t come because I was off the pitch,” he replied.

“They had a good counter-attack, one of the few. We didn’t deserve that. All that remains is to offer our congratulations.”
