‘Ochoa should be playing at Malaga’

Miguel Herrera believes goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa should be first choice for Malaga, although it will not stop him playing for Mexico.

The Mexican boss has seen Ochoa forced to be content with a place on the substitute’s bench at La Rosaleda following his summer move from Ajaccio, having been kept out of Javi Gracia’s starting line-up by Carlos Kameni.

It is a situation Herrera feels should be reversed after seeing Kameni’s recent performances.

“I notice the ‘keeper who is first choice at the moment has made several mistakes but that’s something I can’t get into it,” he told reporters ahead of his country’s fixture with Honduras.

“I see Ochoa is getting restless and that’s to be expected, although it’s nothing to do with me, but he’ll continue working to earn a place.

“I think after his displays at the World Cup maybe he had the expectation he’d be in the starting XI, I don’t know,” he told reporters.

Ochoa, who will captain Mexico and take the No 1 jersey for the Honduras game, is grateful Herrera still has confidence in him.

“I work to play and the rest depends on the Coach, but I feel good and am ready to compete for the national team. There is no age barrier to participate and I’m looking to the future.

“I want to be first choice for the World Cup in Russia,” declared the 29-year-old to assembled media.
