Angeleri: ‘I took one for the team’

Malaga defender Marcos Angeleri admits he ‘took one for the team’ after his dismissal in the 2-1 defeat of Granada last weekend.

The Argentine received a second yellow card for bringing down Isaac Success when the Nigerian striker was through on goal, yet Angeleri insists he took the right decision with the game evenly poised at 1-1.

“Regards my sending off it was a decision I took upon myself because I could have let the player continue, not foul him, and he would have scored a goal,” admitted the Argentine at a Press conference.

“The decision I made was to try to prevent the goal and luckily after that we got the opportunity to claim all three points, so yes, I took one for the team.

“It was the best decision for the team but not for me. I knew very clearly what my job entailed and that was to stop the powerful Granada strikers.

“We knew what we were up against and how difficult it would be but the statistics tell you that I did my job.”

Angeleri revealed that boss Javi Gracia congratulated him on his decision after the game.

“He told me I’d done well and that he supported me. In our position we often have to make a quick judgement and do what’s best for the team.

“If I didn’t do what I did then the result could have been different,” he confessed.
