LFP could honour Messi

The Spanish League (LFP) could honour Lionel Messi when he eventually passes Telmo Zarra’s La Liga goalscoring record.

LFP President Javier Tebas, attending a function in Barcelona, was asked if there were any plans to pay tribute to the Argentine star, who is just two goals away from passing the milestone of 251 goals.

“Why not? You are giving me ideas but we must pay tribute to Messi forever.

“The League mustn’t pass up the opportunity for something like this, something that should always be with us.

“If the time comes then we’ll have to think about it because it will be a historic moment,” admitted Tebas.

Messi could overtake Zarra’s record in Barcelona’s next League fixture against Eibar, although ironically he could even surpass it at the home of eternal rivals Real Madrid when the two clubs meet on October 25.

Meanwhile, Barca teammate Xavi has said it would be ‘very nice’ if it happened against Madrid and the game was stopped momentarily to pay homage to the Argentine.
