Javi Fuego: Valencia’s best to come

Valencia midfielder Javi Fuego is convinced the best is yet to come despite his side’s flying start to La Liga.

Los Che are undefeated in seven League games this term and currently sit just two points behind leaders Barcelona, but the experienced 30-year-old agreed with boss Nuno Espirito Santo that there is still ample room for improvement.

“We have to work even more it that’s possible. I liked the boss’s words [after the 3-1 win against Atletico Madrid] because he said the best is still to come and for me your best days are always ahead of you.

“We can improve as there’s a lot of work to do and things to perfect. At the moment we are up there but we still have a lot play and compete for,” he told reporters at a Valencia Foundation event to assess and promote ‘fair play’.

The former Rayo Vallecano man believes that on a personal level he is enjoying the best period of his career.

“This could be my best ever. Outside football I’m having a great time [after recently becoming a father] and that makes me perform better.

“I’m happy with the team, the city and in my personal life, so I can’t ask for more,” said Fuego, who considers the Valencia players must take advantage of this weekend’s international break.

“We must use it to recharge our batteries and set our minds on the next game at Riazor against Deportivo, although I don’t know what games we have beyond that,” he admitted.
