Abidal: Barca to decide on my return

Eric Abidal insists it is Barcelona that will decide if he returns to the Camp Nou after he hangs up his boots.

The 35-year-old, who underwent a liver transplant in April 2012, joined Monaco in his native France last season before signing a two-year contract with Greek outfit Olympiacos this summer.

However, Abidal has revealed that former President Sandro Rosell made him certain promises before he left, although he is not sure if current incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu will honour them.

“Barca will decide whether I come back or not [in some kind of capacity] but I am open to it. I have an offer from the former President but I don’t know if that applies now, but Barcelona is my club,” he told Onda Cero.

A clearly emotional Abidal went on to speak about his illness when diagnosed with liver cancer while at Barca, and had particular words of praise for former boss Tito Vilanova, who sadly died of cancer himself in April 2014.

“I remember when Tito came to my house to talk about football and my illness. He was a very good person.

“At Barcelona we are a family, as we saw when Puyol said his goodbyes. Everybody is united.

“I occasionally look at the reports of my recovery, when I went to train in the mountains, and it helps me to be positive.

“Every minute counts and you need to take advantage of that. Life for me now is a gift. It’s also very complicated but I’m proud to be an example for other cancer patients.

“I fought to the maximum for my family and friends and I spent some very difficult days at the hospital. You must also believe in God and I always have a positive attitude.

“Everyone in my position would have fought like me,” he maintained.
