Raul Jimenez has spoken of his happiness at scoring his first Atletico Madrid goal, netting in the 4-0 win over Sevilla.
The Mexico international had struggled in his first few appearances for the champions, even drawing whistles from the Vicente Calderon crowd.
But with Jimenez off the mark he is now ready to push on with his career in European football, particularly the Champions League, having moved from Club America over the summer.
“I’m very happy. I really wanted to score my first goal and finally it came,” he told AS.
“My teammates congratulated me. They were very happy for me.
“Above all I’m a professional and I have to give my best in every game and in every training session with Atletico.
“The team is giving me confidence so I can develop in Europe. The Champions League is something I want to play in.
“A few months ago I was watching those games on TV and now I have the chance to make my debut.”
Jimenez added that the competition for places at Atletico is tough, but understands that’s the way it has to be.
“There is no fixed starting line-up. We all want to play but that’s up to the Coach and he has to find the best way,” he continued.
“If the Coach puts you in it’s because he thinks you’re in good form. There must always be intense competition.
“But we have to work as a team to attack and score goals. Whoever starts must give their maximum but not expect to be there the next weekend.”
