Valverde: Athletic need points

Ernesto Valverde isn’t concerned by Athletic Bilbao’s goalless draw with Eibar but admits Los Leones need to start winning matches.

Athletic have picked up only four points from their opening six games and struggled to get past their Basque neighbours on Saturday night, with Valverde lamenting an inability to trouble the newly-promoted side.

“We need to score and we haven’t. We needed one goal. It was a difficult and tough game,” AS reports Valverde saying post-match.

“They were locked up at the back and tried to catch us on the counter-attack.

“I felt we were too exposed, we had too much going forward, but we didn’t create chances.

“We still need points but we shouldn’t be dramatic about it.”

Asked why Athletic are struggling now when a month ago they were knocking Napoli out of the Champions League, Valverde insisted little has changed at the club.

“We really are the same. The team works and fights but things are going too much against us,” he replied.

“We have difficulty trying to create. We need to be more dangerous. We need solutions and we’re looking for them.

“Today [Borja] Viguera was used as a playmaker but he is also used to playing in attack.”
