AFE welcome FIFA third-party ban

The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) has welcomed FIFA’s decision to ban third-party ownership of players.

FIFA announced yesterday that there would by the end of the year be a proposal on the outlawing of third-party ownership, with a transitional period to follow once the ban has been implemented, in which player contracts would have to conform to the new rules.

Luis Rubiales, President of the AFE, told reporters his organisation would welcome the change in regulations, having argued for the removal of investment funds from player registrations against the stance of the LFP, who wanted only to act as regulators for third-party ownership.

“We want to express our great satisfaction from AFE and FIFPro [the international players’ union,” Rubiales said, AS reports.

“We are now awaiting a meeting with FIFA since we are aware there are a number of vested interests that have to make the transition over three years in which there would be an opportunity to establish order.

“This was a vital decision for UEFA, who wanted the ban to come into place immediately.”

AS add that Rubiales was part of the UEFA Strategy Council which pushed for the banning of third-party ownership.
