Mendilibar: Take corruption seriously

Levante Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has called for allegations of match-fixing in Spanish football to be taken seriously.

Marca reports that there were allegations made over a Levante-Zaragoza match from 2011, as well as a Malaga-Elche match from last season.

However, he warned that the focus shouldn’t only be on the small clubs and insisted they shouldn’t be used as scapegoats.

“As a sportsman I want to see the day when things get really serious, but also with the big clubs,” Mendilibar said at a Press conference prior to Levante’s game against Rayo Vallecano.

“I have seen in other countries clubs with an impressive track record have been sent to the Second Division. It’s easy to pick on the small clubs.

“I think Levante is outside [of the allegations]. I think there are people involved who have pointed the finger when testifying and nothing more.

“The club has nothing to do with it and neither do I because I wasn’t here at the time.”
