Report: Malaga-Elche could be investigated

Last season’s Round 36 game between Malaga and Elche could be investigated for alleged match-fixing, according to reports in Spain.

Both AS and Marca claim there is suspicion around the fixture, which ended in a 1-0 away win for Elche and helped the victors avoid relegation.

Malaga were essentially safe on 41 points prior to the match while Elche’s victory took them to 39 with two games to play.

Marca claim the game’s early goal – scored in the 10th minute through a long-range Garry Rodrigues effort – was the end of the action.

AS note then-Malaga Coach Bernd Schuster complained about his team’s ‘relaxed’ performance when speaking after the match.

Marca also allege there is almost €500,000 in Elche’s accounts that hasn’t been explained and a full audit of the club’s books could be forthcoming.

President Jose Sepulcre expressed to Marca his ‘disbelief, shock and helplessness’ at talk of an investigation.

Marca add that the LFP has yet to confirm or deny if they are looking into the game, with an announcement expected next week.
