Madrid fans back Casillas axing

Real Madrid fans appear to be behind boss Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to drop goalkeeper Iker Casillas for Tuesday’s visit of Elche.

The veteran stopper will be replaced between the posts by Keylor Navas, a summer signing from Levante, who will be making his La Liga debut for Los Blancos as Ancelotti ostensibly tries out the rotation system he is planning to use over the coming weeks.

However, in an internet poll conducted by AS, almost 80 per cent of Madrid followers questioned said the Italian was right to leave Casillas out of the starting XI.

The 33-year-old, who made his debut for the club back in the 1998-99 season, has been barracked by a section of the crowd in the last two home games and was defended by club President Florentino Perez at a meeting of the general assembly this week.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, has gone on record as saying he will not be speaking about the goalkeeping issue again this season.
