Roberto backs Oblak in Atleti goal

Olympiacos goalkeeper Roberto has come to the defence of Atletico Madrid stopper and former teammate Jan Oblak.

Slovenian international Oblak, signed from Benfica in the summer, took the gloves in place of Miguel Angel Moya for the 3-2 Champions League defeat against the Greeks on Tuesday.

However, his selection and the subsequent loss in Athens has prompted much debate in the Spanish capital over whether boss Diego Simeone’s rotation policy cost Atleti the game.

It is an accusation Roberto strongly rejects, having been a colleague of Oblak’s from their time together in Lisbon.

“Oblak is a good goalkeeper and none of three goals against us could be attributed to him,” he told Marca.

“I know Jan well, having played at Benfica with him, and Atletico can be sure they’ve signed a great ‘keeper who is also a good guy.

“With him and Moya they are well covered between the posts whoever gets to start.”

Roberto feels the win against Los Rojiblancos does not make his side favourites to qualify from the group stages, whatever Atleti’s take on the matter.

“Our aim is to concentrate on the remaining fixtures. They always say they are not favourites but in the end they usually finish first,” he argued.
