Zubi defends Barca performance

Andoni Zubizarreta has defended Barcelona’s performance after they laboured to a 1-0 Champions League win over APOEL on Wednesday.

The former goalkeeper and current director of football at Camp Nou, felt the many new faces on show in Luis Enrique’s team need some time to get used to playing in Europe’s premier competition.

“We are just beginning the group stages and we got all three points. For a lot of our players it was their first game in the Champions League and besides that we have a squad from which the Coach chooses his best options,” Zubi told Canal Plus TV immediately after the match.

“We are making progress because it was the first time we’ve had a game like that where we had so many new players.

“We’ve passed our first lesson and are still learning, although we didn’t create zones on the pitch where we were superior, and the ball didn’t run how we wanted it to,” he explained.
