Pique: Don’t doubt me over Spain

Gerard Pique has defended his commitment to Spain after his attendance at a Catalan independence march last week.

The Barcelona centre-back has made no secret of the fact he supports a referendum on self-rule for Catalonia, but has hit back at doubts over his backing of the Spanish national team.

“I don’t understand why it upsets people. I’ve played for Spain for 11 years so nobody can doubt me,” he told reporters at a Press conference published by Marca.

“I feel Catalan and I’m in favour of a referendum, which is a democratic process, but that has nothing to do with the Spanish national team.”

Pique took part in the rally in Barcelona during the ‘Diada’ celebrations on September 11 and says he is often judged by what he says and does away from football.

“I’m Catalan and it was Catalonia Day, so it was a celebration. There were 1.8 million people on the streets. I went with my family and friends and enjoyed it.

“But I’ve gradually got used to people judging me. However I try to be relaxed about it, give my all and help my team whenever I can,” he stressed.
