Ancelotti impressed by Casillas

Carlo Ancelotti praised the performance of Iker Casillas and Real Madrid as a whole after their 5-1 win over Basel to start the Champions League.

Casillas continued in goal despite being jeered by part of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd in the home derby defeat on Saturday but got a better reception on Tuesday night.

He made one save to prevent Basel scoring a second goal in the second half and couldn’t be faulted for the goal the visitors did claim, with the crowd largely cheering the captain.

“I’ve said I’m not going to talk about the goalkeepers,” Ancelotti said, according to AS, after the match.

“I look at what the goalkeeper has done on the pitch. I liked it.

“We’ve improved [from Saturday] and we’ve reacted well. The important thing was to start well. Everything has been good and we controlled the second half.

“I saw a good Karim Benzema. He played very well. The three forwards were very good. James played well too and has a good attitude.”
