Cesar Sanchez: Casillas not to blame

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez says Iker Casillas was not to blame for the opening goal in the 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Casillas was whistled by a section of the Bernabeu crowd, who deemed him at fault for Tiago’s early header from a corner.

However, Sanchez feels the Spain international has been unfairly singled out following Los Blancos’ second successive La Liga reverse.

“It wasn’t Casillas’ fault because it was a very difficult ball. We are in the middle of something here where people look very closely at the goalkeeper.

“We must not be unfair. The fans should support those that play every weekend,” he told the COPE microphones.

“I don’t know if there is a solution. It’s happened before on other occasions and it always seems very unjust.

“It’s no good for Madrid if they are playing under pressure from their own supporters. They should be supporting the team in difficult times.

“Any decisions made must be examined very closely. I get the impression things are not done based on people’s opinions, but what is best for the group. It’s the Coach who decides.”

Sanchez, now retired, spent five years with Madrid between 2000 and 2005 before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur, Valencia and Villarreal.
