Zidane: Benzema must deliver

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane has had his say on countryman Karim Benzema’s goal drought at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benzema has been targeted twice by fans this season – after the Supercopa final and again last Saturday when he was substituted at the Bernabeu, both times against Atletico Madrid – and they have started to lose patience with the Frenchman following a barren spell of two goals in 18 games.

However, speaking to RMC Sport, Zidane insisted Benzema is aware of what is expected of him and believes he will start scoring again soon.

“He is the main striker at Real Madrid even though he hasn’t scored much lately, but his critics should always get behind him,” he explained.

“Karim should score for both Madrid and France and he is conscious of that. He knows what kind of player he is and how much is expected of him.

“Last year I was a lot closer to him, but not so much this year because I have been a lot busier.

“In the next match he will score and everybody will then move onto something else,” said Zidane, who this season has been placed in charge of Real Madrid’s B side.
