Ancelotti: No Casillas debate

Carlo Ancelotti has insisted he won’t get drawn into a repeat of last season amid questions over Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas.

Casillas was jeered by sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd during the derby defeat against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Press reports in Spain today have revealed support from fans for Keylor Navas to play.

Speaking at a Press conference prior to the Champions League game against Basel, Ancelotti opposed rehashing the Casillas-Diego Lopez situation of a year ago.

“The debate for me is closed. I don’t need to say anything to shut it down. I am clear,” AS reports the Italian as saying.

“I will not feed a debate that doesn’t exist within this team. I will never talk about the goalkeepers this season.”

The Coach added regarding Casillas that whatever obstacle he is facing, the Spain international has the wherewithal to get through it.

“Casillas is very experienced. He knows the situation and will fix it, without a problem.

“We have problems defending the near post at set-pieces. It happened [against Real Sociedad]. We are working hard to do better.”

Asked about the crowd’s negative reaction to the derby performance, Ancelotti conceded it was inevitable if things don’t go well.

“The fans respond to what happens on the pitch. If we play well, they’re with us,” he continued.

“If we don’t play well, they want more from us. It’s normal.

“We have to get used to the new players and try to play a more natural game. There are players who weren’t here until late August and haven’t had time to train. They need time.”
