‘Don’t whistle Casillas but don’t play him’

Real Madrid members have had their say on the form of Iker Casillas and if the Santiago Bernabeu crowd was right to criticise the captain.

Casillas was the target of the crowd’s unhappiness after Madrid conceded the first goal against Atletico Madrid, failing to defend a corner in what became a 2-1 defeat.

Marca has interviewed a number of Madrid supporters to get their take on the situation with the goalkeeper, who is this year first choice after spending last season largely as understudy to Diego Lopez.

“I’m against all whistles, especially to Iker,” said one member identified as Rufino.

“Don’t whistle him but don’t play him because he’s not up for it.

“Iker shouldn’t play and I think Keylor [Navas] deserves at least the chance to play to prove his worth. Yes, I’d put him in.”

Another member agreed with the call to play Costa Rica goalkeeper Navas, signed over the summer from Levante.

“Surely Keylor will play the next game,” Manuel added.

“All whistles are fully justified. I agree with them. Right now he shouldn’t play, he’s scared of each ball and he’s demoralised.”

The whistles were however condemned by Jose Luis Ramos, chairman of the members’ disciplinary committee.

“Fans should encourage from beginning to end. There should be 90 minutes of encouragement,” he argued.

“I would keep Casillas. He’s not to blame for what is happening,” Jose Emilio contended.

“The club have made commercial signings and its nonsense the players they’ve sold,” Manuel continued.

“The mismanagement is of the President and the Coach.”
