Godin happy to make Atletico history

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is delighted to be part of an Atletico Madrid squad that has made history in winning consecutive away derbies.

Godin played as the champions beat Real Madrid 2-1 at Santiago Bernabeu, having also won on the other side of the capital last season.

The Uruguay international told reporters after the final whistle that setting new records is something Atletico are thrilled to do.

“We’ve very happy, happy for a win and for what we’ve achieved and proud of the work we did, the whole team,” Godin said, according to Marca.

“We’ve made history. We really wanted to win at the Bernabeu.

“We know what it is to suffer and we had to overcome difficult moments in the match. There were times in the first half they attacked effectively and with speed.

“It was hard to stop them but in the second half we’ve improved a lot, did it in time and with the changes we were calm on the ball and created chances.”

Arda Turan, scorer of the winning goal, and Antoine Griezmann were two of the substitutes introduced by Los Colchoneros, Godin paying specific tribute to the pair.

“Games like today are where the work you do pays off,” he continued.

“We’ve been through it but the introduction of Griezmann and Arda gave us piece of mind, we had more of the ball and it was easier to win.”

Atletico underwent a number of personnel changes over the summer, losing some players who were pivotal to winning the title and adding new faces in their stead.

Godin was questioned as to which team he feels is stronger, but took a diplomatic stance.

“I had to say if this team is better or worse because we have different players,” he replied.

“Things change but the important thing is that the team continues with the same mentality. That’s the key.”
