Madrid President heckled by ‘resign’ chants

The resignation of Florentio Perez was called for by unhappy Real Madrid fans as Atletico Madrid claimed victory in the derby.

Mundo Deportivo reports that the chants began after Atletico took a 77th minute lead through Arda Turan, the first shouts coming minutes after.

Atletico took an early lead at Santiago Bernabeu, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to restore parity from the penalty spot.

But Turan intervened late on to give the champions a second straight away derby win in the League and Mundo Deportivo say a section of the crowd turned on the President.

MD add that the chants were heard five or six times before the final whistle, although there’s no mention of how widespread or otherwise the protests were.

Perez is said to retain the support of the majority of the fans but there is discontent after both the derby defeat and the turnaround against Real Sociedad, prior to the international break.

Madrid were leading 2-0 at Anoeta but managed to lose 4-2, with the next two games – in the Champions League against Basel and the League at Deportivo La Coruna – now crucial.

There is a meeting of Madrid members scheduled for September 21, which MD claim could be an unhappy occasion for Perez if Madrid’s form hasn’t improved.
