Cholo: Derby win for the fans

Diego Simeone believes Atletico Madrid’s win second straight away win over Real Madrid was crucial to show the strength of his side.

Goals from Tiago Mendes and Arda Turan, either side of a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, gave the champions victory at Santiago Bernabeu, Atletico winning at Los Blancos’ home last season as well.

Simeone, who watched the game from the stands as per the terms of his lengthy touchline ban, told reporters after the match that it was important for Atletico to show their mettle.

“We don’t change when we come here. I think it’s the first time we’ve won here twice in a row and that’s very important for our supporters,” AS reports Cholo as saying.

“It’s important for a group that has been having difficulties with continuity but has the ability to work as we have shown. That was the second time and I’m happy.

“I think we made good use of the chances that came to us. This is important for the supporters.

“10 or 11 players left. The core is the strength of the group and hopefully we can keep growing. Our strength is our work.”

Simeone had said pre-match that his favourite Madrid player was Iker Casillas, who replaced Manchester United-bound Angel Di Maria as the Coach’s choice.

Asked if that was still the case, Simeone gave a terse reply.

“It would be disrespectful to him to say and I wouldn’t underestimate his history,” came the response.
