Victor Sanchez: No alarm at Espanyol

Midfielder Victor Sanchez believes there is no need for any anxiety at Espanyol after the disappointing start to the season.

Los Periquitos have taken one point from the opening two games – a 1-1 draw at Almeria followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Sevilla – but the former Barcelona player feels things will shortly begin to improve, starting with Sunday’s game away to Valencia.

“This team is good. Those of us that have been in football many years know you can start badly and afterwards improve. Hopefully we can now go on a run and take enough points over the next few weeks.

“There has hardly been any games so far and there is no need for alarm. We have to give the Coach and the newcomers time to settle in,” Sanchez told reporters.

Mestalla is a stadium that has been notoriously difficult for Espanyol in the past and the 27-year-old is aware it will not be any different this season.

“Valencia have strengthened well this year and they’ve got a good squad. It will be tough but we can win if we play to our strengths.

“If we use everything we have in attack and then defend well we’ll take something positive away from there.

“It’s vital for our moral that we get at least a point, particularly at somewhere like Mestalla.

“If we do that then it will give us more confidence for the following week when we are at home.”
