San Mames passes UEFA test

Athletic Bilbao’s new San Mames ground has received a favourable report from UEFA as one of the nominees to host Euro 2020.

The international body considers the stadium meets the basic requirements and the only thing remaining is the installation of VIP boxes, which should be completed by March 2015.

The new San Mames, which replaced the historic old ground [pictured] in September 2013, has a capacity of 53,289 and has been constructed via a €198.1m investment

One of the points praised in the dossier is accessibility for spectators, while room and comfort, the dressing rooms and medical facilities all meet with the organisation’s approval.

Furthermore, the Bilbao city council has already announced its intention to request a Copa del Rey and Europa League finally be staged there.

The only negative points to the project are the stadium’s evacuation plans and the relatively small space reserved for the media.
