‘Munir wants to play for Spain’

Vicente Del Bosque has said there’s no doubt over Munir El Haddadi’s commitment to Spain as the Barcelona forward wants to play for La Roja.

Munir is eligible for Morocco, the country of his father’s birth, but was called into the senior Spain squad from the Under-21s to play Macedonia tonight when Diego Costa withdrew through injury.

Should Munir make an appearance in the match he will no longer be able to play for Morocco and Del Bosque told a Press conference that he didn’t pick the teenager with the intention of tying him to Spain.

“The Under-21s have already qualified and he is a strong player who has started the season well,” AS reports the Coach as saying.

“I don’t know that it’s the most natural solution but it’s the one we have chosen.

“We’re playing an important European qualifier. It’s the will of his parents that he plays for Spain.

“We advised him to decide freely and he is sure he wants to play for Spain. He is Spanish…he’s from Galapagar.

“It’s an important game for us and in these short tournaments any mistakes will be punished. We can’t underestimate a tough opponent. They’ve only lost their last few games by small margins.”

While Del Bosque didn’t confirm or deny Munir would make an appearance, he did touch on the involvement of Iker Casillas and Paco Alcacer, who are both expected to start.

“Casillas will probably play,” the Coach said of the Real Madrid goalkeeper.

“Alcacer has been comfortable and he’s been behaving well, as has everyone, which helps us. Yes, he will play.”
