‘Rayo a good place to develop’

Rayo Vallecano sporting director Felipe has described the club as a place where players can develop before they’re sold on.

In an interview with AS, Felipe reflected on a summer of transfers that saw almost the entire squad replaced, with Rayo also retaining highly-rated Coach Paco Jemez.

“We know we must change almost all the squad. It’s our idiosyncrasy,” Felipe said.

“It’s a handicap and a disadvantage. The players know what Rayo is. We don’t sell smoke when we meet with their agents.

“There are many examples that illustrate this is a good place to develop your career. This is a good place.”

Asked if he had any fear Jemez would leave, Felipe insisted he didn’t, and discussed the offer he had to take up a position at Real Betis.

“Paco’s buyout clause was…complicated,” Felipe said of the Coach.

“This isn’t the time to talk about the Coach’s future.

“I had a contract too. Rayo has helped us all. That’s one of the great things.

“The club has treated me well, I feel very comfortable and happy here. Rayo let me work.”

It was put to Felipe that this Rayo squad is the best the club’s supporters have ever known.

“I know of this dream,” Felipe said.

“I don’t know if it’s the best squad, but it’s the most extensive. We’re happy with our season so far.”
