Celades pays tribute to Lopetegui

Spain Under-21 Coach Albert Celades has paid tribute to his predecessor Julen Lopetegui after a seventh qualifying win in seven games.

La Rojita beat Hungary 1-0 through a Saul Niguez goal, the youngsters recovering from Iker Muniain’s missed penalty to seal the points.

Speaking after the match, Celades, appointed after Lopeteugi took over at Porto, praised the team for their calm approach to a difficult game.

“We thought we were going to find a game very similar to what we had,” AS reports the former Real Madrid and Barcelona midfielder as saying.

“It was difficult to find the goal and create dangerous chances, but we had the patience to play the ball and in the end we found solutions to beat their defence.

“The victory is important but especially important are the feelings. The boys made a significant effort because the pitch didn’t help too much.

“Of course we have to improve but we are very happy for the qualification and the idea of our play.”

Celades added that Lopetegui deserves much of the credit for the Under-21s reaching the tournament in Czech Republic next year, where they will defend their title.

“I would like to mention Lopetegui. He has been the largest architect of this qualification, along with the players,” he admitted.

“I want to congratulate him. Most of what has happened so far is his achievement. We continue with this philosophy and believe 100% in what we do.”
