Del Bosque upbeat despite Paris loss

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque says he is optimistic over his team’s performance despite the 1-0 friendly defeat to France in Paris.

“There were some positive things and we played well, particularly in the first half,” he told reporters immediately after the game, although he admitted the lack of goals is a concern.

“We must connect more with Diego Costa, understand him more, but little by little we are improving,” said Del Bosque.

The 63-year-old caused a mild surprise before the start when he named David de Gea in goal in preference to the experienced Iker Casillas and, asked if the Manchester United youngster would retain the No 1 jersey for the European qualifier with Macedonia on Monday, he remained non-committal.

“David did well and we are happy with him. It was a chance to give him minutes and we wanted to see him in a big game. But we’ll see on Monday.

“We have a very important match coming up and will try to take the three points. We will be more offensive,” he promised.
