Angel Di Maria has revealed he spent an extra year at Real Madrid because of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Di Maria this summer left Real Madrid for Ronaldo’s old team Manchester United and has told a radio interview that he and the Portuguese were good friends.
“The truth is I have a great friendship with Cristiano, it’s thanks to him I had another year in Madrid,” Marca reports the Argentina international as saying.
“I left Madrid in the best way, winning La Decima.
“I’m grateful to Man Utd for paying what Madrid wanted. I don’t have anything to prove.
“In the letter I put everything I felt from the first time I set foot in Santiago Bernabeu.”
Di Maria became the Premier League’s most expensive signing in moving to Old Trafford, although stressed he doesn’t think about the size of the fee.
“I don’t think like I’m the most expensive in the Premier League,” he confirmed.
“The No.7 shirt for United is very nice, it’s something worn by the best players, but there’s no pressure.
“The football is more physical, more about strength, which is Spain wasn’t so much.
“Louis van Gaal told me to adapt as quickly as possible. United still haven’t won but we’re trying to change the situation.”
