Garitano ‘an Atletico fan’

Eibar Coach Gaizka Garitano has attempted to clarify his thoughts on Atletico Madrid after the match between the sides.

Atletico beat the newly-promoted Basques 2-1 but the days prior to the game were marred by footage of Garitano insulting the champions.

But according to AS, Garitano after the match tried to explain the context of his comments, claiming he was trying to make a point to his players.

“Regarding the images, they have given a contrary interpretation,” he began.

“I am a fan of this team. It is a winning team and has achieved tremendous things. I apologise for this.

“I shouldn’t have said what I did about a great team, their fans, players and Coach. I feel bad if I’ve upset anyone and I apologise.

“It’s quite the opposite. I told my players that they’re facing a team who get going, who press.”

On the subject of the match, Garitano admitted he pleased with his team, just not the result.

“I’m happy with the game, but not the outcome,” he continued.

“We were too scared at the start of the game. We usually defend well against set-pieces, but…

“Then we played 70 minutes were we deserved to get something more.

“Atletico have some great players. They need time to assemble the team. But it’s a team that I love.”
