Ronaldo out of Portugal squad

Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of the Portugal squad for the first Euro 2016 qualifier with Coach Paulo Bento questioning his fitness.

Ronaldo has featured for Madrid at the start of the season and scored in the League opener against Cordoba.

But Bento has said there are reasons to doubt how ready the captain is for the campaign and didn’t include him in the group to play Albania next week.

“There’s a question over his fitness,” Marca reports Bento as saying.

“Regardless of having played regularly, he can’t compete.”

La Liga representation is though found in Ronaldo’s Madrid teammates Pepe and Fabio Coentrao, Valencia pair Joao Pereira and Vezo, and Malaga’s Antunes.

Andre Gomes, also of Valencia, has been named, as has Malaga’s Ricardo Horta and Deportivo La Coruna’s Ivan Cavaleiro.
