‘Spain squad needs explaining…’

Vicente Del Bosque has said the Spain squad named for games against France and Macedonia needs explaining.

New faces such as Kiko Casilla, Mikel San Jose and Paco Alcacer have been called up for the friendly against Les Bleus and the Euro 2016 qualifier that follows a few days later.

It’s the first squad named since Spain’s World Cup disappointment and eight members of the group that travelled to Brazil have been left out, with some, such as Xabi Alonso, having retired from international football.

Gerard Pique wasn’t named, however, and Del Bosque explained his thinking as to why the Barcelona centre-back didn’t make it.

“It’s a complicated list. I guess it needs explaining in some points,” AS reports Del Bosque as saying.

“We have had contact with Pique recently. We talked and he has not entirely recovered, he still has discomfort from a hip injury.

“He wants to keep coming to the national team but at this time we thought he should not come.”

Del Bosque added that the situation with Diego Costa isn’t comparable, despite reports from the British Press that the Chelsea striker has damaged his hamstring.

“We’re told it’s a bump and both he and the doctor are at our disposal to come the day after [Chelsea play in the Premier League],” he revealed.

“We’re not closed to anything. Everyone wants to play well and get closer to the team.”

Del Bosque also suggested that Ander Herrera and Rodrigo would have been in the squad but they are both carrying injuries.

On the subject of two of the retired players, Alonso and Xavi Hernandez, Del Bosque publically thanked the pair for their contribution over the years.

“I want to thank them because we had them in our golden age,” he said.

“I accept their decision and very much respect it. I hope they enjoy it with their clubs.

“I want to send my thoughts to [Victor Valdes] because he is a very important player who is in a difficult situation.

“I also want to remember the others who are injured, but especially Valdes for his situation.”
