‘We’ve not seen the best of Messi’

Javier Mascherano believes his Barcelona and Argentina teammate Lionel Messi has more to give in his career.

Mascherano has spoken to Mundo Deportivo and the subject of Messi came up, and Mascherano said as much as his ability, it’s his character he admires.

“Without Leo we wouldn’t have gotten to the World Cup final,” he insisted.

“Leo has a lot to give. I’m not one to think we’ve seen the best version of him.

“He’s an introverted boy for people who don’t know him. For those that do he’s normal and open.

“You can talk with him about football and life. Above all he is very down to earth. That surprises those of us who are closest to him, how natural he is.”

Mascherano also touched on Angel Di Maria and after stressing it was impossible to know if Argentina would have won the World Cup with the ex-Real Madrid man, he suggested Madrid will miss the Manchester United new boy.

“It’s not an issue that concerns me but I think they’ve lost out,” he added.

“He’s a player I like a lot. He’s among the top 10 in the world. He adds balance to attack and defend and has a great engine. You can use him in many positions.”
