Mascherano: I’m like Enrique

Javier Mascherano has said he sees a lot of himself in Barcelona Coach Luis Enrique, and defended his predecessor Tata Martino.

Enrique’s name was broached in an interview with Mundo Deportivo and when listing the qualities of the trainer, Mascherano admitted he felt they were pretty similar.

“I like him. I see myself reflected in his thinking because he has charisma, personality and especially because he not only appreciates talent but effort,” the Argentina international said.

“At that point I think I’m a lot like him.”

Enrique was appointed from Celta Vigo to replace Martino after a disappointing year at Camp Nou, but Mascherano moved to absolve Martino of blame.

“It’s easier to blame one person than 20. But if you don’t train well it’s because of one person. I don’t need a Coach telling me,” he continued.

“We are experienced and we have spent many years in this profession. We owe it to a great club. They pay us and pay very well. The Coach is no excuse.

“You live or don’t live in this profession, you feel or don’t feel.”

Martino was appointed Argentina Coach following the World Cup and Mascherano believes the country has a fine leader on the bench.

“The national team must have the best and Gerardo is one of them, along with Cholo and Pochettino,” he insisted.

“They are the most prestigious and have taken a leap in Argentine football.”
