Alonso: Time to say goodbye to Spain

Xabi Alonso has written an open letter explaining his decision to retire from international football and thanking a number of people.

Alonso yesterday stepped away from the Spain set-up after 114 caps, two European Championship wins and one World Cup triumph.

The letter, published by AS, thanks Vicente Del Bosque, Inaki Saez and Luis Aragones, the Coaches under whom Alonso appeared for La Roja.

“I want to report that I have completed my time with Spain. The hardest thing is knowing when to say goodbye and, after much thought, I think that time has come,” Alonso wrote.

“It’s the end of a glorious stage with the national team that began more than 11 years ago, having been part of an historic generation that has fulfilled the dream of millions of fans, doing something as unique as winning the World Cup and two European Championships in four years.

“Since April 30, 2003, when I made my debut at just 21-years-old, I have lived only good times, so I have only words of thanks to all those with whom I have shared more than a decade.

“I want to thank all of my Coaches, teammates, employees of this squad and the millions of fans who have always shown me kindness and respect.

“Inaki Saez, the unforgettable Luis Aragones and Vicente Del Bosque are figures that I will always carry with me for having developed me professionally and personally.

“I couldn’t list all the colleagues with whom I have shared this shirt but from here I want to thank each and every one of them. You have all shown me and taught me during this memorable period of my life.

“Nor can I overlook the professionals working at the RFEF, who have shown me their love and utmost dedication in making me feel at home. Our success is also their success and I am proud to have shared it with them.

“Thanks to Real Sociedad, Liverpool and Real Madrid for opening the doors to be part of a single dream. In all my clubs, they have always helped and supported me to make it happen.

“Finally I want to convey my sincere thanks to the fans. We dream together and share the glory.

“I have had many unforgettable moments in which you were the characters. Good luck to everyone who continues to work and fight for this shirt, with the absolute conviction to reach new successes.

“Thank you and goodbye.”
