Alonso announces Spain retirement

Xabi Alonso has confirmed his retirement from international football, ending an 11-year career with Spain.

The Real Madrid midfielder announced this afternoon that he was calling time on his La Roja stint, finishing on 114 caps and 16 goals.

The 32-year-old was part of the historic national team that won three consecutive tournaments between 2008 and 2012, including two European Championships and the World Cup in 2010.

“I announce my retirement from international football. It's been an enormous honour for 11 great years. Sincere thanks to everyone involved,” he tweeted via his official account.

Alonso joins Xavi Hernandez as part of the country’s golden generation to retire following this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
