‘We’ve shown we can compete’

Diego Simeone was delighted with his Atletico Madrid after they ‘battled’ to beat Real Madrid on Friday.

The Colchoneros won the Supercopa de Espana 2-1 on aggregate thanks to an early goal from Mario Mandzukic last night.

And the Argentine Coach was pleased with his warriors, and believes that the trophy can inspire confidence in his team going forward.

“I'm happy, for the work the boys put in, for these kids who battle against everything. And for the Atlético fans – tomorrow they will be happy,” he told reporters.

“It's another final. Of the three where we've had to play against Real Madrid we've won two.

“The Champions League final was very important, but winning this against such a good opponent gives us the energy to concentrate on what's ahead, which is important.

“In two games, or one, we have possibilities. In a league of 38 fixtures, Barcelona, even in a bad season for them, almost won the League.

“And Madrid as well – if they had beaten Valencia they would have been top. It is very difficult to compete across so many fixtures. But we are competitive over 90 minutes.”

Simeone was sent off during the match for berating the officials – something he has apologised for.

“It was anxiety, nerves. I said I was sorry. Just at that moment I wasn't protesting, but I was beforehand.”
