Manchester United could be set to swoop on Real Madrid to sign former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria.
Mundo Deportivo cite reports from England that claim Louis van Gaal has identified Alonso as the answer to his problems in midfield – and that Madrid would be open to the transfer.
It’s suggested that Madrid have a surplus of midfielders after the signing of Toni Kroos and Alonso is the most likely to leave this summer.
Madrid would prefer to sell Sami Khedira but the Germany international is expected to resist any attempt to offload him so he can instead leave for free in 2015.
Luka Modric has just signed a new four-year contract and so his position at Madrid is secure, while Isco and Asier Illarramendi are considered players for the future, although the latter has yet to convince the coaching staff or the supporters.
United are also said to retain interest in signing Argentina midfielder Di Maria.
