James: Debut could’ve been better

James Rodriguez has said that while he was delighted to score on his Santiago Bernabeu debut it would have been better had Real Madrid won.

The Colombia international entered the Supercopa de Espana first leg tie with Atletico Madrid at half time, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo, and opened the scoring with less than 10 minutes to play.

Raul Garcia cancelled out his goal, however, meaning the second leg – on Friday at Vicente Calderon – will decide the destination of the trophy.

“Well, I’m happy for a dream day and that’s what today has given me,” AS reports James as saying when asked by reporters about his home bow.

“I’m happy because I scored but I’m not entirely happy. I wanted to win but the rematch comes and we have to win, but they do too.

“They got men behind the ball, closed the lines, while we always want to play quickly and we have to train well and play to win on Friday.

“We must have patience, look for space, have a good touch and we have to be strong.

“We must be calm and as a great team we must go to win.

“They respect Madrid a lot. We deserved more and had more chances to win.

“I’ll play where the Coach wants. I can play several positions and I’m happy to play where the Coach wants.”

James was also asked about Angel Di Maria, who was introduced as a second-half substitute, and said he believes he can play with the Argentina international.

“Of course we are compatible,” he insisted.

“Having great players is always good, and he is a great player.”
