‘Supercopa is still open’

Xabi Alonso believes the Supercopa de Espana is in the balance after the first leg draw between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

James Rodriguez put Madrid in front with less than 10 minutes to play but Raul Garcia levelled shortly after, parity remaining until the final whistle with the second leg to come at Vicente Calderon on Friday.

“They demanded a lot of us and are very compact. It’s a strategy they’re good at,” Alonso said after the match, according to AS.

“They drew level and it could have been a better result for us but it’s still open for the return.”

Alonso started the match alongside Luka Modric and new signing Toni Kroos and paid tribute to the World Cup winner.

“It’s easy to play with big players like him,” Alonso added.

“Despite his youth he has experience at the highest level and is a great signing for the club.”
