AFE chief calls for Spanish football reform

Spanish football is out of date and needs to completely reformed, according to a member of the players’ union.

A judge this week ordered Real Murcia be reinstated into the Segunda Division after the Spanish Federation had initially relegated the club for failing to keep their finances in order.

Yet the delay in the initial ruling and the small timeframe left following the appeal, has meant that the second-tier has had to be postponed until a ruling can pass.

And Luis Rubiales, the President of the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) has insisted that the authorities in the country need to learn from this debacle.

“A deadline should be agreed before the start of the previous season and at the very latest, it should be established the following April or May which clubs have complied with the rules, in which us, the footballers, should participate and which should safeguard the working and sporting rights of the players – past, present and future,” he told Goal.

“All the rules that affect footballers in Spain should be agreed with AFE and at the moment that’s not the case.

“In addition, they are matters that should be resolved with guarantees and security for the footballers and not two weeks before the season starts.

“The players have said to me that it’s incredible that the government allow this to happen and that La Liga doesn’t give any thought to the protagonists of this sport.

“Spain today is the country with the most out-of-date rules and laws of any of those that have top-level professional leagues in Europe.”
