Suarez cleared for friendlies

Luis Suarez is free to play in friendlies for Barcelona and Uruguay after the Court of Arbitration for Sport revised the terms of his biting ban.

CAS upheld FIFA’s decision to suspend Suarez for four months after an incident with Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini but ruled he should be allowed to train with his club.

FIFA’s initial ban covered all football activity, including training or being presented as a Barca player, but he was allowed to join the Catalans from Liverpool.

But CAS have confirmed that not only can Suarez train, he is only banned from official matches, Sport report, which means he can appear in friendlies for club and country.

Uruguay have non-competitive fixtures scheduled for the autumn while Barca have one friendly remaining before the start of the season.

On Monday they host Mexican side Leon in the annual Joan Gamper Trophy and Suarez is now eligible to appear.
